Like a slow boat ride down a river on a sunny day...lovely
By VelvetBullit (1 review) , 16 Jul 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a gentle lovely film for adults and children alike. Based on The Borrowers (tiny people who live hidden in houses of big people) by Mary Norton, it concentrates on Arrietty, the young daughter of the borrower family. Lovely animation, with a great attention to detail, the plants and flowers were especially good. I really enjoyed this film, saw the subtitled version, although its now available dubbed.- Was this review helpful to you?

(59)A Little Work of Art
By a customer , 11 Mar 2013A really lovely depiction of 'The Borrowers'. So beautiful, I watched it twice so that I could enjoy the almost perfect representations of both nature and the interiors of the house. As an adult who first read 'The Borrowers' many, many years ago and who knows the story very well, I was surprised to find myself so emotional at the end of the movie (even at the second viewing). Beautiful AND Touching.- Was this review helpful to you?

Ghibli Genius.
By LoveFilms23 (4 reviews) , 04 Dec 2012One of the best, if not the best in my opinion, from studio Ghibli. A joy to the senses, such a pleasure to watch. I like the Pixar films, but this is such magic, worked by the creative genius of man. Highly recommended for those who love animation.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Borrowers by any other name
By Nootlin (114 reviews) from London , 28 Nov 2012Ghibli movies are keeping the art of movie animation alive in an era dominated by Pixar. The Japanese company make gorgeous, sweet-natured movies, often with strong moral tales at their heart. Arriety looks great, no question, however when it comes to the simple story, it's Ghibli-lite compared to their other movies with similar themes of nature and family and survival: Nausicaa / Kiki's Delivery Service.
I'm not sure why Arriety wasn't called The Borrowers, as I'm sure it would find more viewers with a more descriptive and well-known title. (Maybe the main character rather than the book title is more well-known in Japan...) It is a perfect book for the people at Ghibli to draw upon, fitting neatly with their more favoured themes, I just think they missed a trick in not making this story more involved and interesting.
That said, it's a sweet film, and yet another Ghibli movie with a strong female lead. A fun but unfulfilling watch, recommended to families with young children (stricly 'U' all the way), and especially young daughters.- Was this review helpful to you?

Refreshingly simple
By a customer , 09 Nov 2012Lovely film. This makes a refreshing change to all of the Disney movies. It's style is so simple and makes a relaxing film suitable for the whole family.- Was this review helpful to you?

Sweet Ghibli magic.
By LouiseJ (2 reviews) , 25 Oct 2012As always with Ghibli a beautifully animated and scripted film with loveable characters and fabulous musical score. Their work recently has become a little less imaginative I feel and this is apparent here, still though a great 90 minutes to take you away.- Was this review helpful to you?
