However you came by the genius of AA, you will be enthralled by this excellent homage to the great man. If you were unaware of his work before or you enjoy writers such as Baudelaire or Rimbaud, this will appeal greatly. Maybe you heard rock stars like Jim Morrison and Patti Smith drop his name, don't let that put you off. AA is the true visionary that all the wannabes can only aspire to. So, what's the film like ? Utterly absorbing and mesmerising with superb performances from the lead actors. Beautifully shot in grainy B/W with a sympathetic jazz and blues soundtrack. Set just after the war when AA was referring to himself in the third person and living in Rodez asylum. Hence such gems as ' all the opium in Paris must be at Artaud's disposal ' to the struggling poet Jacque Prevel and it is through his eyes that we watch AA consume enormous doses of various opium syrups such as Paregoric and Laudanum and he spends his time either saturated with opiates or craving them. I loved this film and was pleasantly surprised in every way. It's worth learning French for.
