    [Highly rated reviewer]

The film opens in such a way that you are immediately given the ingredients to make instant decisions on your opinion of the four main characters.

Melvin (Nicholson) is an obsessive, cruel bigot, hating everyone and everything and living next to ..

Simon (Kinnear)a talented gay artist who adores his dog

Hunt plays Carol an exceptionally patient waitress, who is the only one in the restaurant that will tolerate serving Melvin, despite his outrageous comment about her seriously sick son who she worships.

The fourth character is Simon's dog. If there was an Oscar for animal acting this dog would get one. Just wonderful!

The film then takes you on wonderful trip on how their characters develop and change, as a result of them being forced into each others company

I will not spoil the film by revealing anymore other than to highly recemmend it.

It's a film that delivered everything for me, with great acting and an intelligently witty and thought provoking script.

  • Is This As Good As It Gets?!

Jack Nicholson has the most irritating dog! 'This is New York. If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!' 'I hope you find him, love that dog.' - 'You don't love anything!' JN's character has got a crippling OCD. Classic Hollywood - JN is looking for love. This movie seems quite dated now. 'I'm gonna miss the excitement, but I will miss it!' No matter how obnoxious his character is, there will always be someone with a curiosity about him. Is it me, or is this film a little obvious? 'If you look at someone long enough you discover their humanity.' 'Just what the world needs - another actress!' Jack Nicholson is an electrifying actor. Other than JN and the lady he gets close to, the acting is hammy. - I don't know whether that's deliberate. I actually think Jack is way too good for this film. - I recently saw him in, 'Easy Rider,' and he really shone. I think the maid, is the actress who plays the cleaner in the Goonies! 'Over a dog!' 'What if this is as good as it gets?!' 'Actually I think that's their technical name!' Jack Nicholson, as usual, is flying. 'Nothing worse than having to feel this way in front of you.' 'Why did you do this for me?!' JN aka Melvin continually puts his foot in it! She was certainly fishing for a complement! 'The truth is you do bother me enormously..' It really does drag its feet.

wow very disapointing for a film with such a promising cast. An ugly bearded dog outshines one of the worlds greatest actors. Didnt think this was possible.
