With her German accent and mispronunciations, Elisabeth Bergner is unintentionally hilarious as Rosalind in this lavish film version of Shakespeare's comedy, directed and produced by her husband Paul Czinner. Laurence Olivier speaks beautifully but seems awkward as Orlando in his first screen venture into Shakespeare, which led him to the (temporary) conclusion that the Bard and the movies should stay clear of each other. JM Barrie, of Peter Pan fame, adds a whimsical edge to the adaptation.
Modern-dress version of the play, with the Forest of Arden becoming an urban wasteland inhabited by the homeless. It sounds as ugly as it looks, with some wretched speaking of the verse.
A miserable production sans colour, sans humour, sans warmth. Directors should be adventurous and imaginative in adapting Shakespeare, but they should also expect others to judge their efforts. This was dull. The actors never had a chance to express either the philosophy or the merriment of the play. Exchanging the Forest of Arden for a recycling tip was tantamount to swapping green leaves with grunge. Wintry light and coldness pervades. Oh misery!
At least I only rented it.
