    Atmospheric

Poignant and moody with lots of humour and real characters. Sometimes slow, it was still gripping and the cinematography was stunning. You could smell the sweat, feel the fog and taste the dust. Well worth watching and great acting too.

    Dry as dust..

Based on a thirties novel, one of the great undiscovered? the fim looks really good - first rate cinematography perfectly capturing the time, place and mood. The film, however, could never be described as great. It lacks real substance and is very slow. Nothing happens, and after about an hour, I thought I might turn to dust myself. There have been plenty of good movies about struggling writers -Adaptation, for instance, with Nicholas Cage. But there is only so much energy and action one can generate around a guy sitting at a typewriter tearing out his hair in frustration and screwing up endless sheets of paper. It takes a lot of skill to bring this kind of thing off successfuly. I thought the script lacked depth and Colin Farrell lacked the necessary qualities. And although Salma Hayet had no difficulty in playing the Mexican waitress he falls in love with, there was no real chemistry between them, apart from the one love scene. Otherwise, slow and boring, I'm afraid.
