Robert Duvall allows a private passion to cloud his professional judgement with this Argentina-set thriller, his third film as writer/director. Indeed, his portrayal of a hitman who is seduced by dancer Luciana Pedraza while on a mission to Buenos Aires ranks among the worst of an illustrious career, as there's no nobility or heart in the meticulous killer. Moreover, there's too little narrative justification (beside Duvall's genuine fascination with the tango) for stalling an already turgid thriller to put Pedraza through her paces. Much more interesting is the hitman's affection for girlfriend Kathy Baker's daughter, which suggests the suppressed decency of a man dehumanised by his trade.
This was a little gem with Robert Duvall at his best, he was totally believable as the violent killer near the end of his career. The film did leave you wondering what else was happening in his life and if there were other parts of his personality that were even more sinister and the dancing was wonderful!
A film for the man of the house with a suitable amount of thrill and for the lady of the house, a different kind of thrill... The tango scenes! That is, if you like that sort of thing!
The film sometimes has a documentary feel to it so natural are the actors. For all latin culture lovers, this is a great film that will transport you to the heart of Buenos Aires and its "Salon de Tango". A heart warming film, great to watch when it's really cold at home!
