This is more in the spirit of Goscinny and Uderzo than Claude Zidi's Hollywoodised blockbuster Asterix and Obelix Take On Caesar, but still nowhere near as satisfying as reading the original comic book. However, it's a vast improvement, as director Alain Chabat not only trusts his story, but also keeps a much tighter rein on Christian Clavier's exuberance and Gérard Depardieu's buffoonery. Monica Bellucci is perfectly cast as the Egyptian queen who demands that architect Jamel Debbouze build a golden palace within three months to win a bet with Caesar (Chabat). But, despite the odd misfiring set piece and the occasional burst of pantomime theatrics, the show belongs to the potion-fuelled duo.
Jolly slapstick romp through Roman history with some good gags along the way.
With Amelie and Les Choristes, Asterix, Misssion Cleopatra is the french blockbuster.
Indeed, Alain Chabbat, the director have imported the spirit of the famous 'Les Nuls' in the Gosciny world of Asterix to create a universe in which actual references are brilliantly introduced in the Egyptian era.
Even if Christian Clavier and Gerard Depardieu seem to be out of the step, you will discover an hilarious Jamel Debbouzze, a gordious Monica Belucci and the best french comedians.
So I can bet that you could not stop laughing throughout the movie.
This is smart, funny and you definitey cannot miss it.
To rent.
