I really wanted to like this film, but ...
By mikethegerman (1 review) from Buckinghamshire , 15 Sep 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Being an Asterix fan, I couldn't wait for this film to be released on DVD, as it had not been out in any of the cinemas near us after original release.
The previous live action Asterix films are been brilliant, so I expected something similar.
You can see that a lot of money and effort went into this film. The special effects are spectacular, and the cameos of real-life sports stars work really well.
However, the storyline doesn't, and I can't put my finger on why that is. Is it the original material, or the added love story subplot?
All I can say is that I felt disappointed. Maybe they should have stopped at 'Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra'- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)Un Grand Laugh Mais Avoidez le Version Anglais
By Griff1893 (13 reviews) from London , 11 Oct 2012A great laugh out loud live action version of the Asterix books with all the sillyness of the originals kept plus plenty of updates and some wonderful sight gags. Wonderful performances particulary from Alain Delon as a magnificently vain Caesar and Gérard Depardieu just managing to stay on the right side of camp with his fey Obelix though the jury is still out on Clovis Cornillac whose portrayal of Asterix seems a little crude in comparison to the smooth tongued Christian Clavie of the earlier versions. Loses 1/2 a star for an overlong ending to pop in a few cameos from French sporting stars though a certain German in the chariot race knocks them into a c__ked hat but I won't spoil that for you! All in all not the best of adaptations but still cracking fun. However make sure you watch it in the original French with subtitles for the English dubbed version is dire, to hear great Gallic actors dubbed with such second rate voices as much a sacrilege as painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa.- Was this review helpful to you?

DISAPPOINTED viewer
By col1976 (2 reviews) , 04 Jul 2011BEING A LIFE LONG ASTERIX AND OBELIX FAN I FOUND THIS FILM DIFFICULT TO VIEW AS IT WAS VERY POORLY DUBBED INTO ENGLISH. THESE WITH THE FACT THAT THE HUMOUR FROM THE BOOKS HAD BEEN LOST ON ITS JOURNEY TO THE SCREEN MADE FOR A POOR EXPERIENCE.- Was this review helpful to you?
