This rippingly good terror anthology of Psycho author Robert Bloch's tales showcases reanimated, dismembered limbs, a magic suit, homicidal split personalities and tiny murdering robots. There's an ingenious linking device — each story is a mental patient's case history — building to a Grand Guignol twist finale, and the excellent cast (including Robert Powell, Herbert Lom and Peter Cushing) wrings every ounce of horror from a clever script. It's handsomely mounted — the confines of the asylum's cells are bleakly oppressive — and adroitly directed by horror veteran Roy Ward Baker, and the underplayed black humour comes as a welcome plus.
Lively horror compilation with echoes of Caligari and Dead of Night. Gruesomeness sometimes overdone.
This is a classic horror film which, if you are a fan of tongue in cheek effects and clipped British accents, will not disappoint. A new doctor arrives at the asylum and is set the task of identifying which of four patients used to be the asylum doctor. He is taken in to visit the patients and, as he meets them, their individual stories are told. These range from the bizarre to the very silly but there is an appeal that keeps you watching. The twist at the end of the film is outrageous but still rather appealing. This is the type of film that may have terrified you when you watched it as a child but will amuse when watched again in a nostalgic and satisfying way.
