Jonathan Silverman stars as a lovable schmuck who's dating the lovely Rhonda (Allison Smith). But his pal Joey (Dan Cortese) bullies him into more adventurous romantic escapades. Funny in parts, . . . At First Sight feels like a warm-up for Silverman's Single Guy TV series, which began the same year. Like its main characters, however, it doen't really go anywhere. The film features a hilarious cameo from voice actress Pamela Segall as a wallflower turned vamp.
A case history by Dr Oliver Sacks inspired this story about a blind masseur, Kilmer, who finds love and regains his... read more on Time Out
This was a good little film. Well acted and very enjoyable.
It wasn't a soppy romance as I first thought it might be. It was mainly to do with the man's blindness and how he copes with it and other things (I won't spoil it!)
You could most certainly do a lot worse than rent this film.
After watching this film I had a very long conversation with a friend who lost her sight a couple of years ago.
I was very interested to read in the credits at the end of the film that this actually had been based on a true story of a couple that suffered (or do I mean enjoyed) a similar experience!
I say 'enjoyed' after speaking to my friend, who asured me that she would have all the same feelings and reservations as Virgil had - and she was sighted well into her adult years ( so she had some memories of the things that she was translating with her hands!). But, even so, she would be willing to put herself through everything that happens here just for another glimps of her now beautiful daughter, a sun rise, the horizon, a sun setting over water, one of her beloved horses...... the list goes on forever!
I have always had the greatest respect for people that we asume are less fortunate than those of us who are sighted, but as this film demonstrates beautifully the other senses of the body do compensate the individual in a way that few sighted people can begin to understand or appreciate.
I honestly think that this is probably the best film that I have seen Val Kilmer in EVER. The range and depth of the character that he plays truly shows what he is capable of when he really tries - excuse me ~ I forgot his unsurpased performance of Doc Halliday, also a true testament to his consumate ability as an actor!
Interesingly, though, both Val and Kelly McGillis were in another film in 1986 together - Top Gun ~ which launched several careers into orbit (not lest Tom Cruise!), well I'm afraid to say that Val has definatly withstood the test of time much better than Kelly!
Watch this film and try and appeciate what it has to offer - possibly a very difficult task if you are not blessed with a friend such as mine!
Go and stand in the rain and shut your eyes, stop for a monment when you are in (or out!) of a store in town and try to see without your eyes! Think this sound crack-pot? Then try it! I promise you an experience that you will never forget!!!!!
