Enjoyable fantasy romp
By a customer from Birmingham, UK , 07 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This was one of four films in which Doug McClure appeared in an action role in a fantasy/creature feature film in the '70s, of which three, including this one, was based on work by Edgar Rice Burroughs. As a lad I had read his Pellucidor series of tales, so I was aware of the story outline beforehand. This a fast paced romp, with some nice eye candy and not-too-effective matte scenes, but the pace of the film means that you do not have time to worry over cheapo effects. McClure produces a solid if not brilliant acting performance (I first saw him in a TV Western series called The Virginian - he acted the same there) and Peter Cushing hams it up in the manner he adopted when he played Dr Who in the dalek films of ten years previously. Monsters and grotesque creatures abound, but they are hardly up to the standard of contempory Harryhausen films and are laughable compared to modern CGI effects. If you've been brought up on modern films with digital sfx you probably won't like this film, but if you enjoyed films such as Sinbad or Jason and the Argonauts I think you'd like this, even if the sfx aren't up to Harryhausen's standards!- Was this review helpful to you?

(8)Troy McClure's Finest Hour and a Half
By Lugodoc (109 reviews) from Portsmouth, UK , 03 Dec 2011Very 70's and somewhere in the middle of Doug McClure's Edgar Rice Burroughs British Victorian kids sci-fi adventure movies oeuvre. Did I spell that right? Having just read my way through Burroughs' Barsoom novels (all eleven) I think this film gets closer to the feel of authentic Burroughs than The Land That Time Forgot. Burroughs' heroes tend to have a ruthless violent streak in them and McClure gets grimmer in this than is usual for him or most kids films, and with all the violence and fire this film looks like it was hard, sweaty work to make. The Victorian mole machine is surprisingly well done, the special effects are damn good for the 70s and Peter Cushing is a perfect Victorian inventor, quite ruthless himself. And there is Caroline Munroe at her peak. I met her once at a sci-fi convention in the 80s. Still stunning. She wore a tight-fitting maroon suede two-piece. Very low-cut. I can see it now.
Troy Donohue was the other actor conflated with Doug to create the Simpson's character Troy McClure. They had similar career arcs (both were in The Virginian).- Was this review helpful to you?

Apparently there are big rubber monsters at the Earths core
By TheWatchman (520 reviews) from Suburbia , 12 Mar 2011and most of them want to eat us.
But then thats B-movies for you, isnt it? Something always wants to eat us, or use us in some disgusting way. Luckily, for the peace-loving tribes that live below the Earths core, they have Troy McClure, sorry DOUG McClure to save them.
He and Peter Cushine drill their way into science fictions depths with the help of a large tank that theyve turned into the worlds biggest corkscrew. Then they meet monsters. But, hey, its not all bad. Apparently Caroline Munro lives down there and even wears make-up in her cavegirl outfit (it is possible the Earths core is on an Avon ladys route). Together they must help the nice tribe stop the nasty tribe from sacrificing them to big rubber crows or something.
This is B-movie gold. The first half I found a little slow, but it picked up into one giant cheesy, flamethrower-frog spouting wonderful, colourful mess. If you know what youre in for youll love this. However, the only (unusual) down side was Peter Cushine. I normally love him in these roles, however, he came across too annoying and more like C3P0s granddad.
This is one film that is due for a remake. Oh, wait, they sort of did with 2008s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, didnt they? In that case, just stick to the original.
And remember You cant mesmerise me Im British!- Was this review helpful to you?

Spoilt Childhood!
By a customer from Stockton-on-Tees , 23 Jan 2009I remember watching this when I was a kid. For some reason I thought it was a really good film. How times have changed. Terrible acting. Not only from Doug McClure but even Peter Cushing is terrible. monsters are so, so fake. And theres no excuse with the special effects. Sinbad & Clash of the Titans was the same sort of year, and there effects were good. Dont waste your time with it. The land that time forgot is better.- Was this review helpful to you?
