Taking its cue from Japanese manga and the current breed of adult-friendly animation, this feels like Disney's attempt to embrace the new millennium. A visually delightful tale of explorers hunting for a mythical lost continent, the film dispenses with the studio's traditional trademarks of cute animals and foot-tapping songs. Instead, it offers grown-up, multilayered storytelling combined with a relentless pace more associated with action features than cosy family viewing. Exquisitely animated and voiced by Michael J Fox and Leonard Nimoy, among others, the fantasy presents Atlantis as an earthly paradise, soothing the retinas before the consequences of its characters' foibles and ambitions explode into a thrilling climax. Directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale demonstrate a satisfying maturity with the result that this movie is more reminiscent of non-animated adventures such as 20,000 Leagues under the Sea than the duo's previous Disney assignments, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast.
Interesting attempt to revitalise Disney's approach to traditional animation, abandoning songs and cute animals and using the style of comic-book artist Mike Mignola; a less hackneyed story, without mushy mysticism at its centre, would have been an even g
"...The visuals are a stunning widescreen mix of digital and hand-drawn artwork....The giant waves, monster crustaceans, flame-throwing fireflies and rivers of lava arrive in a furious rush..."
this dvd is superb. Milo Thatch ( voiced by Michael J. Fox), is a historian and adventure seeker, who has been searching for the lost continent of Atlantis for years.
Being aided financially with a crew that is well equiped, and the expertise of the leader of the expedition Commander Rourke (voiced by James Garner), Milo searches for the continent, braving obstacles set in place to dissuade travellers, such as the giant kraken, that guards the entrance to an undersea cave.
After the encounter with the creature, the expedition is severely reduced.
Fortunately Milo is quite knowledgeable, and eventually the crew reach the lost city and meet Kida, the King's daughter who along with Milo, tries to solve a mystery involving the city, and rescue it from those who want to exploit the city itself.
Soon Milo, finds himself at odds with Commander Rourke, and other members of the crew, as they reveal the real purpose they came to Atlantis.
Will Milo and the Atlanteans survive the catastrophe that is about to occur?
and will Milo and the beautiful Atlantean - Kida fall in love?
watch this fantastic film to find out.
As a fan of animation, I was looking forward to watching this film. I'd seen a trailer several years ago, and the visuals looked very impressive.
However, I was left very disappointed. The story is very poor, and I doubt children would really understand what is going on. The characters are equally as dismal, possessing the same depth as their 2D avatars.
The animation is okay, with a nice blend of computer and hand drawn animation, but this is not enough to make up for the poor, confusing, and tiresome story.
Definitely not a good choice for kids - they'll quickly become bored!
Not up to Disneys usual standard, but a very good show none the less. Both of my children enjoyed it.
Tedious and bland production line animation with few moments of any interest.
Cliche ridden and sugary. Not recommended. Avoid.
An enjoyable Disney film. Interesting as it is slightly different to the usual Disney format but still a very good film.

My 9 year old daughter (who dosen't usually sit totally still when watching a video/DVD, did so for this film. She said she enjoyed it and gave it 7/10.
I watched a bit of it, not one of the best Disney films i've seen, but certainly not one of the worst.
This was a run of the mill Disney film with the usual good graphics, but lacked all the charm of the old classics or the lovable characters of the pixar/Disney films such as Monsters Inc.
I think older children who are into animation would enjoy this, but I found it rather dark with lots of fast-paced underwater chases and little story.
Great watching for my little girl
the animation took alittle to get used to the story is okay
michael j fox providing the hero's voice to this one,
