Atomised is one of those frustrating films. I want to like it because the acting is uniformly excellent and I can see that there's a great film in it. It's just that Atomised is not that great film.
It's about two half brothers (Moritz Bliebtreau and Christian Ulmen) and their relationships with each other and their respective partners. Sadly this gets buried under pretentious musings on genetics, race, history and other things with Roehler seldom finding moments of connection between the characters.
It would be a dead loss without the stellar cast. Bliebtreau is fantastic as troubled older brother Bruno, further making the case that he's among the best actors working in Germany. Ulmen also puts in a strong shwing and his scenes with Franka Potente are the most engaging in the film as it leaves the psychobabble alone for a while for an affecting portrayl of childhood sweethearts coming back together.
In smaller roles there are strong contributions from Martina Gedeck and Corinna Harfouch.
It's Nina Hoss though who represents the missed oppurtunity. She brightens up the film for far too short a time with a flighty turn as Bruno and Michael's hippy chick mother. A film about her as a parent would probably be a hell of a lot more entertaining than a film about her f**ked up offspring. Sadly Atomised is the latter.
Unwatchable film of an unfilmable book.
Periodically the main characters look perplexed and embarrassed. You will, too.
If you haven't read the book the film won't make much sense. If you've read the book, the film will irritate greatly.
(Gave it 5 stars just to make sure you got to read this. Ha.)
