    [Highly rated reviewer]

I was a little surprised to find that this DVD was in fact made-up of two feature lenght episodes, chronicling the life of Caesar Augustus. Nevertheless, though not totally au fait with the history of the period, I was impressed, and entertained. In my view it captures very well the intrigue and politicking which put, and kept Octavius Caesar in power, and made him one of the greatest Romans. The title and cover maynot immediately attract, but well worth the effort to watch a quality, entertaining and educational rendition

  • Poor Mans Rome

One of the bad things about having 5000+ channels to choose from is that television exectutives need something to put on them occasionally when people get fed up with re-runs of Only Fools and Horses and Open All Hours...

Being the ever so original people they are, someone saw what a success Rome was and decided to blow the budget hiring Peter O'Toole, and pay a group of school children to write the desperately ridiculous dialogue.

This TV series collected on disc is simply dreadful and I didn't bother watching the end of it ( I knew what happens anyways...) so I would suggest staying well away from this one and save yourself a painful few hours.

Like other reviewers, I managed about half an hour of this movie before getting so fed up with the awful acting that I had to switch it off.

  • Lame acting, corny plot ... terrible

A couple of the other reviews referred to the limp acting and cheesy production of Augustus but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. That was a mistake. I put up with about half an hour of this cringeworthy nonsense before I was forced to call it a day. I urge you not to waste your time too.

'Gladiator' has a lot to answer for. The surprise success of Ridley Scott's film seemed to revive the sword-and-sandals epics after years in the doldrums. Sadly, after suffering through 'Troy' and 'Alexander' on the big screen and soporific made-for-TV stuff like this version of Augustus' life, the genre looks dead and buried again. Peter O'Toole as the elderly Augustus and Charlotte Rampling as his scheming wife Livia give some class (and presumably international TV sales) to this drama, but they are sidelined for much of the action which flashbacks to their younger selves. It tells the familiar tale of events concerning Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Cleopatra, but the cast of (largely Italian) unknowns, poor dubbing, lacklustre direction and a weak script conspire to make this very hard going. The later events were covered much better in the 70's BBC TV series 'I Claudius' (still worth catching for Sian Phillips' mesmerising performance as Livia). Let's hope the forthcoming BBC 'Rome' is better than this. It could hardly be worse.....
