  • Eye opening account of man's inhumanity to man.

This is an excellent and thorough account of the atrocities that the Nazis subjected on its enemies. It concentrates on the Jews who suffered at Auschwitz as the title suggests but there is an overarching account of persecutions there and elsewhere. The suffering of the members of the Polish resistance, gypsies, members of the Red Army is cited and there are moving accounts by survivors of the Nazi killing machine. It also covers the culpability of national governments throughout Europe and beyond who assisted in the deportations to the death camps and less well known acts of heroism and defiance such as those in Denmark. This really should be shown in every school as part of the curriculum.

This series is spectacular it gives into all insights and aspects of the holocaust and especially on Aushwitz.

With people from both sides of the wire giving interviews its heart breaking and interesting series well worth a rent if you are interested in the Holocaust especially as its written with the historian Ian Kershaw who many will know is an expert on the Third Reich.

  • Chilling testimony from former SS & Slovene soldiers

    Rated - 5.0 stars

Beautifully put together documentary but hard for me to watch as my maternal family are Croatian Jews and my grandmother, Eva Bjelobrk, was murdered in the 1940s with my great grandmother coming back alive from Birkenau and my mother, Zlata (born in 1943) and her sister Senja hidden by the nuns in Croatia.

I learnt a great deal on disc 1 regarding the Soviet POWs and the Polish prisoners and it's very important to remember them.

What I found most chilling was the testimony of the SS soldier who stated that the only thing he concentrated on when killing Jews by firing squad was his aim! He even stated that Jews were responsible for problems on his fathers farm 'and nothing has changed' meaning he still hates Jews! The Slovene fascist soldier was just as chilling when he laughed and smiled saying he got all the clothes the Jews left behind and stating 'they deserved it' when talking about their transportation to the concentration camps. I could have honestly strangled both with my bare hands. The fact they still hate the Jews now is just shocking and is testimony to the brain washing against the Jews in the 1930s/1940s. Excellent documentary. Miss it at your peril.

  • Man's inhumanity to man at its worst...

There can't be a single person in the world who doesn't know the details of what took place at Auschwitz, but nevertheless I can strongly recommend this documentary; it's a detailed account of what happened there from start to finish. Admittedly it's not easy viewing, but it happened for real - all those men, women and children who were murdered in the gas chambers is raw horror - and although it's many years ago since they perished they should never be forgot. Man's inhumanity to man at its very worst.

Was looking forwards to this DVD but on receipt turned to be badly damaged! More inspections greatly needed I think.

This clearly isn't the sort of documentary that you watch for entertainment: it is, however, a necessary reminder to anyone who believes the Holocaust was a distant event that occurred in a faraway place and time with no bearing on today. This excellent series delves into the murky, brutal history of Auschwitz and the circumstances surrounding the Holocaust in general. It reveals the complicit actions of occupied nations, as well as those who resisted the Nazis in their genocidal quest, and, most importantly of all, it confronts members of the SS still alive today. Their lack of remorse or regret stood out for me as the single most revealing aspect of this series.
