Powerful drama

This is a powerful piece from Bergman and contains some highly passionate performances from both Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann. Essentially the film centres around a fragile mother-daughter relationship and how these women confront their deep seated emotional insecurities.
I found this to be a highly engaging drama and I recommend this to any serious movie fan.

All the anguish you'd expect is resolutely there but, as always, it's the extraordinary performances that Bergman coaxes from his cast that makes this such a compelling watch. Ullmann is typically transfixing as the daughter finally unleashing her long bottled-up emotions but really this belongs to Ingrid Bergman as the self-absorbed older woman. In her first and only collaboration with her near namesake, she truly lives in her character, giving probably her greatest performance in her final feature film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Disfunctional family

The mother and daughter trauma portrayed here is both convincing and harrowing in its detail. He was also a superb director of actors and never better than here where the performances from Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman are quite superb. I could quibble with the over-use of the close-up, but for students of the art of acting this is a must see.- Was this review helpful to you?

I wished there were fewer monologues, and that the actors were left to use other devices than speech more frequently. There are few rays of sunshine. Wonderful- Fantastic work by both Bergmans!

The film centres around the mother-daughter relationship between Liv Ullmann and Ingrid Bergman, and they do it wonderfully. It's intense, powerful, tear-jerking, and incredible given that evidently Bergman was undergoing cancer treatment at the time. I'm a huge Bergman fan and this film really shows her depth and range. It has one or two funny, frothy moments reminiscent of 'Indiscreet' and 'Cactus Flower'; and the piano-playing harks back wonderfully to her first role, also as a pianist, in 'Intermezzo'.
