    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film started very well with a new ship and a new captain if a frustrated one at not getting the command he'd hoped for.

The ship is an invasion support vessel....hence the Command....'Away all boats' The work up to efficiency is handled well as the new captain demands the very best from his crew.

The actual combat role of the ship in the war in the Pacific is not well handled. Great battles and new invasions of territory held by the Japaneese are dimissed with a flashed name only of each invasion.

The only real action scenes are those of the Kamikasi attacks on the U. S. fleet, the severe damage inflicted on the ship and the mortal wounding of the captain.

The compusory 'love scenes' ( to give the film acceptability to the supposedly 'love demanding....human touch' audiences) are handled by 'flash back' technique, supposedly by the officer thinking back to how he met his love and the arrival of their baby son.

To be honest there was much more reality conjured up in that 'flash back' than in the actual role of the ship and her war in which after severe damage and in imminent danger of sinking, she makes it back to harbour even as her captain dies from his injuries so fulfilling the prophesy of one of the men who built her saying that she would 'Come Home'.

  • Better than average war movie

I must admit, before I saw this movie, I never considered Jeff Chandler much of an actor. OK, I know his portrayal of Cochise was much admired, But To me, it was just another example of Hollywood dressing up a white man as a native American. However, in Away All Boats Chandler is superb as the driven but not inhuman captain. Problem is he's hampered by an insipid (to put it mildly) supporting cast. George Nader, Lex Barker, Julie Adams, need I say more? Another minus is the almost total lack of action sequences, what there are are pedestrian in the extreme. Not a great war movie, but worth a look if only to discover that there was a lot more to Chandler than I gave him credit for.
