Kitamura, the director of the first Azumi left this sequel alone as he is fast becomming a heavyweight in the japanese film industry. Unfortunately for us, a new director was brought in and failed to make this film shine.
It follows on pretty closely from the first movie, but the action seems to have taken a backward step. Apart from 1 scene with a poisoned spider web, all the fight scenes seem slow and badly choreagraphed. Azumi looks extremely amaturish when weilding the sword and you don't get the sense that she is a master swordswoman.
The film at points tries to offer the viewer a moral perspective and weight to the story line. The actors however, fail to convince with some poor emotional scenes including the typical head in the air scream when a loved one dies.
Films like Crouching Tiger and House of FD have moved action sequences and stories forward so why cant Azumi keep up? I'm yet to see Ong Bak, but I'm told this will reknew my love of the fighting genre. I know this is a negative review, but its still probably worth a watch; at least its not Hollywood!
