Wake up! Its a brand new day! The beat, the colour, the chat and the moves of hip hop Brooklyn greet you and never really go away. When the teenage dream is broken by blood and blades, and yes B-girl is a blond, this is the motor for the rest of the film.
Restart back with mom in Los Angeles. A Battle is set up between dance crews. This is the main event. The froth does have a dark underbelly, a haunting edge-of-failure subtext.
B-girl is always late for school but she spins Homer to teacher like shed never been away. The film is a pastiche of Rebel Without a Cause, Saturday Night Fever and one scene could have been lifted straight from another teen revenge film: Jaws.
The soundtrack keeps the beat with the story and whilst it is white middle-class adolescence, I found it a taut enjoyable film. The dancing often, but not always, excellent; I feel the northern soul boys back in the day were far more gifted. And the routines in Singing in the Rain far, far more memorable with Cyd Charisse incomparable.
It is proper widescreen, has a 5:1 soundtrack option but no subtitles can be accessed. The extras are the usual flippant overviews of those involved. Th e directing and editing use interesting scene changes which never impair on your involvement in the film.
