I had heard some good things about this film, but as someone who didn't enjoy 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song', I didn't think I would enjoy a film about the making of it.
Anyone who has tried or dreamt of making their own film, or has any interest in 70's movie making, or if you just like funny 'one man against the system' type films, should watch this. I cannot recommend this film enough...
And Mario Van Peables is execelent(!?!?!?!) in a role that clearly means everything to him.
You may not have heard of the film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song that was released in '71 - don't worry neither has almost anyone else for that matter. This film is a labour of love by Melvin Van Peebles who plays his father, Mario, in the true story about Mario's making of the film. Mario Van Peebles was already an established director in Hollywood but wanted to make an independent black film for black audiences. The first Spike Lee if you will. It is filmed well enough, with good editing and music. It is also acted well with a cast that is engaging to watch. You can tell that Melvin Van Peebles relishes the idea of playing his father and so in many ways it is a homage to him. Baad Asssss won't win any awards in originality nor is it a film you would want to see twice or even recommend for that matter but if you are interested in learning about the Blaxploitation film genre of the 70s than this is a decent enough springboard.
