Seeing it again after many years I can't believe how much I'd missed. Such a perfectly constructed, balanced film - vivacious colour and plain simplicity, lavish sensuality and ascetic restraint. It is a joy - and a warm-hearted parable. The villagers' austere faith is never mocked, but Karen Blixen's story leads them to a fuller understanding, taking away their fear of all things corporal at their very spectacular Last Supper.
