Known as Shogun Assassin and containing 12 minutes' footage from its predecessor, Sword of Vengeance, the second Lone Wolf and Cub movie earned notoriety in the 1980s when it was branded a video nasty. Tomisaburo Wakayama returns as Ogami Itto, the disgraced executioner who supplements his sword skills with the blades studding his baby son Daigoro's pram. But while he's allowed a few moments to reflect on the pain of both losing his wife and being betrayed by his brethren, his primary purpose is to shed blood, which he does with awesome power thanks to Kenji Misumi's frenetic direction.
A cut above routine martial arts movies, though one in which blood gushes and spurts in copious quantities; the emphatic, shadowy directorial style is influenced by Sergio Leone, and the many fights are imaginatively staged.
Two words: F***ing awesome.
Babycart illustrates why the samurai film is one of the best action genre's in the world.
The simplicity of the fight sequences is what makes it stand out from any other samurai film.
A classic and a must for every fan of Kill Bill.
The second of the Lone Wolf and Cub series and one of my personal favourites.
The film follows Ogami Itto as he travels, with his infant child Dago, through the land he calls hell, on his quest to find the Shadowy Yagu clan, who first sending the brutal female ninja's the "Akashi" then the self proclaimed "Gods of Death"!
This Film was one of the main, inspirations for Kill Bill, along with Lady Snowblood - Bizzard from the Netherworld and was banned along with the rest of the series, until recently. Now shown in full uncut glory, this gory but amazing "Pop" Samurai film, is a must see for fans of the Genre or "Kill Bill. Vol1"
