The “St Mark Passion” is sadly one of Bach’s lost works. There have been previous attempts to reconstruct the music from sources in the composer’s other works, notably the Cantata No. 198, the so-called “Trauerode”, the “St Matthew Passion”, the “Christmas Oratorio” and the cantata, “Wiederstehe doch die Sunde”. Koopman, has, however decided on a more creative response. Although the chorales are, as with other versions, taken from the collection published by Bach’s son C.P.E. Bach, the recitatives have been written by Koopman himself, using his vast knowledge of the composer’s work and compositional style. This performance was recorded at the Chiesa di San Simpliciano in Milan on the 30th of March 2000.
