The final part of the Back To The Future trilogy is a rather different film from the first two. Set primarily in 1885 it introduces several new characters and spoofs a new genre; the western.
Of the new characters it is Thomas F Wilson's new addition to the Tannen family; Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen which works best. He hams it up to great effect as the dumbest of his characters yet. Mary Steenburgen brings believable presence to her role as Clara Clayton; the doc's romantic interest in what is a surprisingly touching sub plot.
However it doesn't all work so well with Michael J Fox and Lea Thompson both contributing truly horrendous oirish accents as Marty's great-great grandparents. Sadly this is about all Thompson, so good in the first two films, gets to do here.
Fox and Christopher Lloyd are old hands at their characters now and both are excellent once again.
The Western setting allows for a different feel to the set pieces and all are well executed, particularly the breathlessly exciting climax.
It's refreshing that Zemeckis and Bob Gale didn't go for what Wayne's World would have called the mega happy ending, instead it's bittersweet but with the promise of further adventures. However the films are best left as a trilogy, and about as consistently good an example of one as cinema can offer.
