This irresistible combination of dazzling effects and sly comedy propelled Michael J Fox to stardom and Robert Zemeckis to the front rank of Hollywood directors. And time has not robbed it of any of its vitality. Fox plays the young student who travels back in time to the 1950s and acts as matchmaker for his future parents, who are showing no signs of falling in love. It's beautifully played by the cast (honourable mentions to Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover), and makes the most of an ingenious script from Bob Gale and Zemeckis that finds time to poke fun at 50s icons and lifestyles between the bouts of time travelling. Zemeckis's direction is equally adroit and he never lets the effects swamp the film.

Where do you start when trying to review a film of this much class. Maybe by saying that if you havent seen this film, then where have you been for the last 2 decades! I defy anyone, of any age, to watch this film and not press the eject button without a smile on there face. (No matter how many times you?ve seen it!!!!) The film is almost twenty years old, but it still looks as fresh as it did back in 1985.
If you havent seen this film, then press the 'ADD' button straight away. If you have seen it still press the 'ADD' button straight away, you cant watch this movie too many times.
I never thought this movie would date, and I guess I hoped it wouldn't, but it has, and the special effects that wowed me in the 80's left me wanting more today.
This film is a classic, which is still as fresh today as the day it was made.
Its the old time travel story that people would think has been done so many times before. But because of the great acting, comedy and effects (that still look great after 18 years) this film refreshed the whole genre. Michael J Fox is great as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd is brilliant as Doc Brown the mad scientist. The story is very believable, you can just imagine some mad inventor actually doing the stuff that Doc Brown does. And thankfully they changed the ending from what was originally scripted otherwise you would have seen the time machine being driven into a large nuclear explosion (which you can hear about if you listen to the very interesting commentary). The main plot of the story is: Marty gets transported back to 1955 where he accidentally keeps his parents from ever meeting and falling in love, which causes a chain reaction that could vaporise his future and leave him stranded in the past. His only hope of getting back to 1985 is to make his parents fall in love. Which is easier said than done.
Also on the DVD are outtakes, deleted scenes, the making of Back to the Future, and a feature that pops up facts at the bottom of the screen as you watch the movie which is definitely worth trying.
This is a movie you will enjoy watching over and over guaranteed.

This film may be over twenty years old and in some ways shows it's age. Leaving that to one side, it is still a film that leaves you smiling. I've had to put parts 2 & 3 on my rental queue!

nothing to say except.GREAT,FANTASTIC
one of the films of the 80,s decade and then it went beyond with the sequels.
some of the effects still stand up to scrutiny even now but what u cannot deny with this movie is that it works in every possible way.
the cast play off each other well, the comical timing is superb and the script in general is just great fun.
but a word of warning.after watching this you will have to watch the two sequels as well.
popcorn crunching fun.
i have a young son who i thought would enjoy this. i watched it alone first as it's a PG and am glad i did. too much swearing. shame really as it seems a fun story with a strong moral point plus the time travelling car would have gone down a storm, but i can't justify him sitting through that kind of language.
Wow what a movie, this film was ahead of its time and still is. I loved the first one, part two is equally good, and watching it on DVD makes it an even better experience. The dvd has great bonus materials and extras. Great cast, great script 10/10. Watch it...no buy it!
P.S.
Where can I get myself one of those hova boards???
I love this film, my mum loves this film and my younger brother loves this film. It is the type of film that seems as if it was always there as each action is perfectly placed. If you haven't seen it (have you lived in a hole?) it's about Marty Mcfly, a teenager who accidently goes back in time and meets his parents when they were his age. Marty needs to get back to the future but he also needs to get his mum and dad to fall in love as his mum fancies Marty. Genius, everyone wants to see their parents when they were young and the twist is uncontrived and effortless. Brilliant cast that play their characters in both 1955 and 1985 without attention to makeup. Seamless.
Excellent film for special effects, comedy and music.
The styles and language between the time periods were well presented "Pepsi free? anything without sugar then"
Okay a lot of it was corny as well but I like period comedy and sci-fi so this film is one of my classic favourites and I would recommend it as a rainy day film.
i rented this film for one reason i've not seen it for an absolute age films of this brilliance don't even get on terrestrial tv anymore god knows why the film is about a lad who goes back in time his mum has a crush on him and if he cant get his mum and dad to fall in love he will cease to exsist there is also a kick ass soundtrack with this film by far the best of the three if you've not seen it rent if you have seen it but not for a long time like me rent it it will make you feel good and maybe remind you of what you did when you were younger superb
Great, tight script, full of clever juxtapositions between the two time zones. Good story, and as entertaining now in 2006 as it was when it was made.
