In this highly regarded teen drama, Mick (Penn) is a tough teenager who, in spite of the attempts of his straightlaced girlfriend J.C. (Sheedy), can't seem to walk the straight and narrow. Escalating confrontations with a rival group of students led by Paco (Morales) ends in the tragic death of Paco's younger brother by Mick at the wheel of a car. Mick's incarceration takes him off the street and drops him into a new world of competition where he needs to establish his credibility in order to survive and does so with typical violent flair. The ironic arrival of Paco, jailed for the retaliatory and vicious rape of J.C., leads to a continuation of the brewing feud between the two angry teenagers.

Ugly but yawnworthy saga of up-to-date Dead End Kids.
Definately NOT to be confused with the garbage of the same name - this is a grim but fascinating movie featuring the best acting you will get from a young actor (sean penn when he was 20 or so). Set in a juvenile detention centre, all the problems that such a place has are shown in unflinching fashion. Basically this is a forgotten gem with none of the hollywood trappings of Tom Cruises early tripe for example which is required to sustain these movies beyond the 80s. You wont be dissappointed ... kinda like an American Scum if you will
I remember first seeing this Sean Penn flick when it first came out at the tender age of 8 (older brother's eh?) and the violence scared the hell out of me. Funny how tame it all seems now. It's still a good film, along the same lines as Scum and Made in Britain, portraying the life of a petty thug who goes too far and ends up 'Inside' with the big boys. There are a few memorable moments with the coke cans from the machine, and the end fight, but the rest of it has lost the impact it once had. There have been too many similar stories since, showing more horrors in jail or borstal, but not neccessarily better done. Maybe I was just too young to see it, attributing too much quality to what is, ultimately, an average film. But it was still enjoyable, and has not put me off finding all the other films I saw as a kid, or was dragged out of the lounge halfway through watching!
