Most helpful review Bad Lieutenant

  • Harvey Keitel delivers his greatest performance in this bleak drama

    Rated - 5.0 stars

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Few actors have proved as willing to accept challenging, risky roles as Harvey Keitel. Other actors have achieved more fame, won more awards and made bigger hits, but none have been as courageous.

'Bad Lieutenant' is the film in which Keitel went deeper than ever before. As the lieutenant of the title he blurs the lines between cop and criminal. His married life is a sham, he drops the kids at school but can't wait to get them out of the car to get his first fix. When he breaks up a robbery he takes the cash for himself. He is under no illusions, he knows he is bad but is too far down the road to change.

This film is not an easy watch. The lieutenant slips deeper into degredation, drinking, stealing, taking drugs. In one of the films most disturbing scenes he pulls over two teenage girls and subjects them to what can only be described as verbal rape.

And yet, when a local nun is raped the lieutenant sees this as his chance for redemption. This will divide viewers, how bad can a man be and still deserve salvation?

The film is directed by Abel Ferrara but it's Keitel's picture. This is not acting, this is a man stripped to his soul for the camera. Ferrara wisely give the whole film over to his leading man whose shockingly brilliant display helps paper over some of the cracks in the narrative. As the lieutenant slips towards his nadir, Keitel reaches his zenith.

Tempted to give 5 stars just for Harvey Keitel's Performance, one of the best i've ever seen. A Truly dark disturbing film about a cop's downfall into drugs, sex and gambling, not for the faint hearted as it contains some horrid scenes. Slight over-indulgence in some parts mind, but overall a good dark film

Harvy Keitel must have really needed the money to be associated with this garbage. Life's too short to waste ninety minutes watching this !

very, very self indulgent.... less intelligent than it would like to appear. Appears repititious to me and the story needs development.

After waiting a few years to get to watching this film as its been on my wish list for a long time, I wondered what all the fuss was about.

Besides the famous/notorious scene involving a different kind of police helmet, struggled to see what this self indulgent plotless film had to offer.

I'm looking forward to seeing the re-make which I don't say often as I have heard good things about the Herzog take on this film.

The title says 'Bad Lieutenant' and boy is Harvey Keitel bad in the sense of someone who has NO morals what-so-ever, btw I'm NOT giving away anything telling you he drinks takes drugs doing both with prostitutes because it's in the preview. The character totally abuses his position but if it were not for one scene he could be anyone and not a Police Officer.

I rated it average because I felt emotionally disconnected to the Lieutenant but it's a good character observation movie. One warning! If you're a christian then you'll dislike the violent raping of a Nun (not by him!) it's graphic and the scene where he pulls two women over is lol a bit strong but funny!

But if you want to see Kietel at his immoral best then rent.
