Indie film-maker Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World) comes unstuck with this charmless black comedy about a grumpy, alcoholic safe-cracker. Billy Bob Thornton plays Willie T Stokes, who scopes out shopping malls to rob by posing as a holiday Father Christmas. As he and his elf sidekick (Tony Cox) attempt to perform the scam one last time, Thornton becomes involved with a Santa-loving barmaid (Lauren Graham) and a lonely overweight child (Brett Kelly). Thornton's character is sadistic and abusive, and the constant foul-mouthed shouting becomes dispiriting very early on. The film thinks that it's subversively critiquing Christmas sentimentality, but is so lacking in anything resembling heart, taste or wit, that it's just a hard slog.
Scabrous comedy that makes a change from the usual glutinous Christmas fare, though it, too, goes soggy before the end.
If you want a change from all the run-of-the-mill sickly Christmas crap, Bad Santa is a must. Hilarious and dark as hell, with an unconventional feel-good ending. And to the reviewers offended by the swearing, the 15 tag is a wee clue in advance that it's not gonna be for little kids - maybe Muppets Christmas Carol would be more to your tastes.
The bestand funniest film I have watced this year. For those who are sick of the airy fairy xmas films, this one is for you. Its sweet, its funny, its cheeky and its mad! I loved it!
Lost and 300's Rodrido Santoro is the latest star to sign up for Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's dark comedy I Love You, Phillip Morris, according to Digital Spy. He joins Knocked Up's Leslie Mann - who appeared with Carrey in 1995's The Cable Guy - in the cast for the film, which has been adapted from Steve McVicker's book by the team behind Bad Santa and Cats And Dogs, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. The movie is based on the true story of Carrey's character, con artist and married father-of-four Read more
