After working on this movie for more than four years on an extremely tight budget (and with a cast and crew consisting only of himself and a group of close friends), filmmaker Peter Jackson eventually completed it with the help of the New Zealand Film Commission, who were very impressed with what they'd seen so far of Jackson's first cinematic effort. In BAD TASTE, a small New Zealand coastal town is taken over by the extraterrestrial Lord Crumb and his army of alien invaders, who are planning to "harvest" the inhabitants for an intergalactic chain of fast-food restaurants. But Derek (Jackson) and his mates from AIDS (the Astro Investigation and Defense Service) are sent in by the government to destroy the enemy at all costs and ensure the survival of mankind. With plenty of gross-out shock effects, grotesque humanoid aliens, and high camp value, it's easy to see why this film became a cult favorite and a big hit on the midnight-movie scene. Jackson would go on to direct the ultragory DEAD ALIVE, the acclaimed drama HEAVENLY CREATURES, and one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history--THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

Director Peter Jackson is making an epic live-action version of The Lord of the Rings in his native New Zealand, but this cheerfully disgusting horror comedy was his first full-length feature. Jackson, who received an Oscar-nomination for 1994's psychological drama Heavenly Creatures (the film that launched the screen career of Kate Winslet), here directs in chaotic fashion, with large quantities of gore, flying viscera, macabre humour and wild special effects. Indeed, this man-eating alien invasion, made over a five-year period, remained the bloody benchmark of sci-fi horror until Jackson topped it himself five years later with Braindead. The title says it all so, be warned, those of a sensitive nature.

The first film directed and starring Peter Jackson, I first watched this many moons ago on Vhs, and remember laughing, and quoting lines from the movie for weeks after. Rented this title to see if the 'ol magic was still there after seeing Jackson blossom after this movie came out with titles like Frighteners and Lord of the Rings, and I can safely say it was as funny this time round as last. Classic dark humour, and dodgy special effects, but remembering Jackson paid for this movie himself, and borrowed a mates house to film the finale this is what film making is all about. Brilliant!
A very funny film, made by the best director around. If you like this then 'Braindead' is a must see.
Rent out your top three scary films and turn the lights off this Halloween, for Empire Online has published its writers' favourite Halloween triple-bills suitable for a festive viewing party. The first trio includes Hellraiser, Halloween and Evil Dead II. Hellraiser is a grisly eighties horror, while Halloween is considered by many as the original slasher movie. Sam Raimi's Evil Dead II - the story of a cabin full of strangers is invaded by spirits - rounds off the selection. If you want to... Read more
