One to admire or abhor, director Nicolas Roeg's case history of a sexual obsession dazzles with flashbacks and disturbs with What if? sidetracks. Art Garfunkel is the psycho-psychiatrist involved in a sadistic affair with Theresa Russell that starts with the girl's suicide attempt and ends with even nastier revelations about their relationship. Seven years after his poignantly creepy Don't Look Now, Roeg piles on angst-ridden chic to the detriment of human values and sympathy, but, for what he achieves in complexity and conviction, it's well worth watching.
Weird and unsympathetic sex melodrama, presented with the disconnected style expected from this director as a series of flashbacks from the heroine's near-deathbed.
'Bad Timing' was one of the last of Nicolas Roeg's unbroken run of classic films from the late sixties to the early eighties. It stars Art Garfunkel as a coldly analytical psychiatrist who gets involved in a twisted obsessional affair with Theresa Russell, resulting in her attempted suicide. Most of the film is told in flashback as Harvey Keitel's Vienese detective tries to piece together the course of events leading upto Russell's suicide attempt and the reason why Garfunkel's account of the evening just doesn't seem to add up.
Garfunkel continues Roeg's tradition of extracting career-best performances out of rock star actors, as he did with Jagger and Bowie in his earlier movies. Russell is also excellent in what was her film debut. She and Roeg married soon after.
When I saw the Penn-starrer I thought I'd discovered something new, but Roeg got there first. Not a film for people who found The Usual Suspects hard to follow. Very good psychosexual drama-cum-mystery wherein cop Harvey Keitel tries to extract an attempted murder confession from Art Garfunkel. Can't help wondering what smoking all those cigarettes did to Art's voice.
