Shades of Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story fall over this Bollywood domestic drama, which was originally written by B R Chopra in the early 1970s. Production on the film was delayed until the early 1990s when it was to have been made as a vehicle for Dilip Kumar. Then Chopra fell ill and the production was left to his son, Ravi, to complete. The story now stars Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini as the married couple who discover their four sons are too busy with their own concerns to care for them in old age. Salman Khan and Mahima Chaudhary lead the impressive supporting cast. But despite its well-intentioned attempt to bridge the age gap, this sentimental melodrama feels rather old-fashioned.
Baghban is a wonderful film. The music is absolutely top-notch and is one that is traditional to its very core. Performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini are the highlight of the film; it's truly superb to see the two magas of yesteryears come back at this time in the film industry. The story addresses a very true fact in an around India today and one the youth should take note and look at closely. It will certainly make you realise and cry. The only downfall for the film was that it wasn't executed in such a grand scale as it, I feel, should have been. Nonetheless, this film will still spring those heartstrings.
Baghban typifies the old style of Bollywood drama which always centers on morals and traitional Indian family values.
Bollywood Gods Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini are at their very best. They share amazing on screen chemistry and as always demonstrate superb acting during some very emotionally charged, dramatic scenes and monalogues. Sickeningly they both look stunning together - even if they are around 60 years old!
Amitabh sings a couple of his own songs which is a real treat and dances very well in both traditional and more modern dance routines.. ...where DO his talents end?
I highly recommend his film.. but one word of warning would be to keep a very large box of kleenex handy since this is a heart wrencher and a tear jerker!
