Beautiful and warm-hearted film
By ThomasKus (147 reviews) from Gloucester , 10 Apr 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
China at the time of the cultural revolution. Political indoctrination leads two young intellectuals into the countryside where hard work and political rigour is meant to break their free will. However, with the power of classic western literature they begin to change those around them and a gentle love story develops with the daughter of the local tailor who is more than a match for both of them.
Apart from being shot in beautiful scenery this is a story that is ultimately a triumph of hope and humanity. I was brought up in East Germany and can personally relate to some of the issues around 'forbidden books', 'free speech' and political pressure. The acting is superb and the subtitles are never intrusive.
Overall a first class film and a great joy to watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

(28)Languid yet attractive
By MidnightsTail (35 reviews) from Oxford, England , 18 Oct 2012I doubt that re-education in 1970s China was anything like as romantic and easy going as this film suggests. But it is a pleasantly languid story, visually attractive, with odd yet engaging characters. I get the impression of glimpsing a certain amount of genuine Chinese mentality, anyway something distinctly non western.
If you have a poetic soul you'll enjoy this quiet ramble through rural romance. Otherwise leave it alone and go watch something fast with zombies ;)- Was this review helpful to you?

Beautiful, classic
By gliberty (4 reviews) , 12 Sep 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
I don't know why the critic's review is so low, this to me is a classic, beautiful story - and rich with the emotive feeling of the time, totalitarian but also just rural culture of youth. Loved it.- Was this review helpful to you?

For the love of Balzac
By a customer , 16 Jun 2012A very poetic and mesmerizing film. Highly recommend it if you like Chinese films or anything remotely similar to the bland hollywood story lines.- Was this review helpful to you?

The pace is great and the actors brilliant. It is nice when you come across that type of films. Unfortunately, it does not happen often- Was this review helpful to you?
