This 10-part HBO television miniseries focuses on Easy Company, a group of American soldiers in World War II, tracking their experiences from the beginning of boot camp to the end of the war. Anchored by actors Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, the series gives detailed attention to their experiences as a group, as well as the way that each of them develops individually. Based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's book of real-life accounts, BAND OF BROTHERS was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who worked together on SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Hanks also directed one episode, featuring his son, Colin Hanks.

This series makes for superb viewing. It comes up with the trumps in every area: acting, characterisation, direction, production, cinematography, music, make-up, storyline, sound, props, the whole thing. This is a class production from beginning to end and I thoroughly recommend it. It will be remembered for many years to come as the series that, like 24, changed televsion for ever.
The Band of Brothers series is without a doubt the best war cinematography I have seen, wether on TV or big screen. In fact I would go so far as to say it is the best TV series of any type that I have watched ever. I think what makes it good is that it is based on a true story. It avoids the overt philosophising that mars some other war films (Saving Private Ryan for example), yet paradoxically there is probably more to take away from it than most films which labour their points. The combat scenes are very realistic and you are left in no doubt about the brutally random nature of modern warfare. Fascinating and thought provoking - I am pleased to be living in relatively peaceful times!
