My 'honest' review

What's good...
Bang Rajan has a classic ‘under dogs’theme and the filmmakers do their best to get you right behind the heroic villagers. All the battle scenes are ‘real’ and not CGI, which not only makes a refreshing change but adds to the drama and intensity.
What's bad...
Some of the film making techniques are a lot different than that of Hollywood and I hate to say it but I was thinking that Hollywood would of probably done a better job…but saying that, they would probably of had Colin Farrell in a blonde wig playing the lead role…which is never a good thing!.- Was this review helpful to you?

By TheNobbly (8 reviews) from Bradford , 14 Nov 2011This is a great film to watch, it has all the elements of a classic underdog story and the character development gives it an overall realistic effect. The fact it is based upon historical events gives it a real edge and the battle scenes are realistic enough to make you understand what these guys were up against. Also, as a Brit, it was nice to watch a film about conquering imperialism and not have to apologise for being British. Big thumbs up all round.
Oh btw, if you're not interested in hearing from the actors don't bother with Disc 2. The film is on Disc 1.- Was this review helpful to you?

Simple but good.
By a customer from Southall , 09 Feb 2009i'm sure most of the emotion has been lost in translation, but none the less the action more than pays up for this, simple story line but action packed, get a 5 star from me, mostly because i like a good kung fu flick.

Moustaches & Siamese Weapons

I'd wanted to see this movie for about six months after spying a trailer in the special features of Tony Jaa's Warrior King. The appeal of an epic set in Thailand - with at least some footing in historic reality was too much to miss.
Watch it for a snapshot of something different (Historic Thailand- Very interesting- you'll learn something too)
Watch it for kick ass two handed curved Siamese Broardswords and the Moustachioed warriors that wield them - i think you'll be suitable impressed
Don't watch is for a great script or particularly well put together storyline - the real history will be different and whatever has been depicted here doesn't flow nearly as well as other epics though lets face it - if you watch any swordsman movie after gladiator its got alot to live up to.....
But do watch it for a glimpse into a world you won't have seen before (if you enjoyed those scenes in Apocalypto of the Maya Capital -which felt really alien from the standard ancient cultures we are familiar with- you'll like this) - but probably not one to sit down with your girlfriend with though - she'll just fall asleep and or complain that its rubbish, which it is but its worth watching anyway for the points listed above.

amazing
By a customer from Cardiff , 10 Jan 2008wow. what a great film. from start to finish you will be completely glued to your seet. it doesn't have the budgets of hollywood films, but that doesn't matter here. what they have done is a master peice and will be spoken of for years to come. it doesn't have the typical cheesy dialogues and overacting like the yanks do. you must watch this film- Was this review helpful to you?

Solid, exciting action epic
By Savage (632 reviews) from London, England , 02 Dec 2007The story of how the peasants from the small village of Bang Rajan held the mighty imperial Burmese army at bay over the course of eight full-on assaults in 1765 - and it's the usual stuff about liberty against enslavement, the good common man against the all-powerful, uncaring enemy. The battle scenes are outstanding, properly bloody and full of action - we are plunged into them almost immediately (after a brief narration explaining the context to us), and they continue without much lett-up.
What the film lacks, however, which some of the other reviewers here have touched on, is an almost total lack of characterisation. There's the drunken guy, the new leader, the wise old fellow, and a couple of romances, featuring women who really want to fight alongside the men, but it's all strictly two-dimensional, by-the-book stuff. History does not bequeath to us the identity of any of those who fought for the village of Bang Rajan, so it's a shame that the film-makers, with a blank canvas before them, didn't try harder to engage our minds as well as our eyes and hearts.
