Bangkok Hilton
By a customer from London , 05 Sep 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This Australian series came out in the late eighties and gripped Australian viewers. It is thrilling, sad, hopeful. An innocent woman in life and love tries to find her real father and travels to London from Australia. She meets a man who hides inside her camera bag, a stash of drugs which are uncovered by customs in Bangkok. She is of course, inoccent - her so called boyfriend the culprit. Realising the seriousness of her situation and coming to realise Thailand's hard line against drugs and the real possibility she could face the death penalty, she contacts a lawyer who knows her father. He agrees to help her and her father represents her. Kidman, at first has no idea who the man representing her is - he is played by Elliot who is superb as a disgraced army officer from the Japanese war - living in Thailand and coping with alcoholism. It goes deep into the characters and Kidman's cell mate is brilliant. It climaxes into a thrilling conclusion with many questions answered. The fact that Thailand is so strict with drugs, you feel a real empathy and sypathy toward the inoccent and naive Kidman. If you can get past the initial two epsisodes, it culminates into a brilliant series that you will want to watch again.- Was this review helpful to you?

(82)Very good
By a customer , 29 Sep 2012What a nightmare, thoroughly believable and a lesson to anyone traveling and falling in love with strangers. I could hardly watch some parts and my usually hard lip trembled at some tragic moments. I think the very end could have been different, and I won't say how of course, but the idea Nemesis comes to mind.
We found the first episode slow, but it does put the main protagonists' lives in context.
Kidman really did impress me, and although the film is radically different, I'll go and reserve 'The Others' again, as I was bowled over by that one- Was this review helpful to you?

Compelling, riveting viewing. Suitable for those who prefer a jolly good drama without blood and guts and foul language.
By a customer , 23 Oct 2011Brilliant gripping drama, edge-of-your-seat stuff! Superb acting, especially Denholm Elliot. Music is certainly not intrusive, I would rather it be described as reflecting the theme and area of the world in which the film was set.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bangkok Hilton - City and River that never changes..
By Casers (2 reviews) , 28 Jun 2011Just love this film (apart from tinny music in disc 1). Great to see that Bangkok has remained virtually unchanged (along the river) throughout the last 30years - I just love Thailand!- Was this review helpful to you?

Bangkok Hilton still delivers
By Jcamp (28 reviews) from Canterbury , 16 Jun 2011Despite some intrusive, tinny music (particularly in episode 1) and fact that it was obviously made in the 80s, Bangkok Hilton is still entertaining and well acted.
The drama gets grittier after episode 2 and offers an insight into Thai justice that is both unrelenting and clear.
Denholm Elliot, Hugo Weaving and Nicole Kidman (pre Hollywood) act their socks off. Stick with it!- Was this review helpful to you?

Bangkok Hilton.
By a customer , 15 May 2011Can't wait for Disc2!
We enjoyed this disc very much - good to see Denholm Elliot again.
You can imagine this really happening to innocent people. My son was asked to carry a suitcase on to the plane bound for Australia by a man in Singapore! Luckily, he refused.- Was this review helpful to you?
