Baraka

From Nepal to Kenya, from Australia to Brazil, people try to cope with the changes that have altered their landscape, crowding them together and speeding up daily life. The film shows us these alienated people, but also images of traditions -- whirling dervishes and Tibetan monks -- that offer different, peaceful ways of existence. Shot in 70mm in 24 countries, this awesome musical and visual montage in the tradition of 'Koyaanisqatsi' expresses the global existence of nature and man in the broadest sensory terms.

Shot on Todd-AO 70mm stock, so that every image positively shimmers, Ron Fricke's heartfelt film is, sadly, a wasted opportunity. The ecological points he makes are blatant and laboured, while his over-reliance on snazzy editing and time-lapse photography draws too much attention to technique at the expense of the visual content. The contrasts between urban jungles and the areas of natural beauty they imperil do occasionally strike home, but, while it's easy to look at these often beautiful moving postcards, Fricke presents locations without identifying them, so most viewers will quickly find themselves lost and overwhelmed.

Stunning. Humbling. Spectacular. Moving. Wonderous. Mesmerising. Breathtaking. Magnificent. Words which cannot begin to describe this epic piece of cinematography. Watch it and allow yourself to be immersed in the incedible imagery, on this astounding journey.
