A remarkable dark and brooding opera
By Stanley Smith from Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. , 01 Aug 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This opera is less than one hour long, but for me it was far too short. The orchestration suited the story to perfection being dark and brooding like Bluebeard's castle. Being a film the secrets behind each of the seven doors was enhanced. Only a bass could portray Bluebeard adequately, and the bass here is excellent. I will not spoil it for others by revealing what is behind the doors, but each one found me waiting to see what was behind the next. How many wives he had and where they are will be revealed before the end. Unmissable, Bartok
should have provided music for the Edgar Allen Poe films.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)A great opera
By Boulbon (73 reviews) from Chiswick , 28 Oct 2012Duke Bluebeard's Castle is now a century old. It is a unique and intense work, the action seems to take place inside the heads of the two singers, Bluebeard and his new wife Judith. The story is at once very simple - Judith wants to know Bluebeard's secrets - and complex - what she sees and hears and discovers is ambiguous. Judith succeeds in getting the keys to seven doors, each hiding seven of Bluebeard's secrets. It is one of the most gripping and fascinating of all operas. The orchestral writing is magnificent and immerses the listener in Bartok's descriptive music. It is so good it almost need only a pair of ears. This film looks a little dated but follows the libretto and score faithfully. Close the curtains, turn the sound up and lose yourself for an hour in one of the twentieth century's great operas.- Was this review helpful to you?
