  • What it means to be loyal

    Rated - 4.0 stars

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Other reviews of Baseline have called it a Brit Gangster flick, but after watching it that classification sells the film way short.

Whilst there is violence and cockney men beating each other up, the film also has at it's heart an examination into the meaning of loyalty.

The main storyline is that of Danny, a nightclub bouncer who finds himself unwillingly at the behest of a major crime boss and the challenges he faces trying to lead a life on the straight and narrow whilst working for a gangster.

What I enjoyed most about this film was the truly moving sub plot involving Danny's friend Paul played by an excellent Gordon Alexander.

Other great performances came from Dexter Fletcher and Freddie Connor as Danny. I also found Sheraiah Larcher's performance as Sean truly menacing.

Beautiful to look at with a great score and soundtrack, Baseline is a must see.

OK so the UK isn't best at film making, and this isn't the best, and the plot is a bit weak, and the main actor....well I've seen toffee apples act bettter, but it's worth a watch I think.

  • Not for the sqeamish!

    Rated - 3.5 stars
    By Chikita (1 review) , 05 May 2011
Not a connoisseur of the genre, my boyfriend made me watch it as payback for all the chick flicks... Overall I thought it was pretty good. It's an basic story about an average guy but it gets pretty tense and it was good to see Zoe Tapper's character get in a bit on the fight for survival. Best thing was probably the torture scenes (not for the sqeamish!). I'm not a torture fan but for the non-hollywood budget I guess it was very well executed and looked all too real! Also liked the music, which I maybe noticed more 'cause I had my eyes closed after the torture scenes. :P

Dunno what to say really. the main character Danny was a bit of a dweeb! Jamie Freeman as the nasty, unreasonable gang boss was what you would expect. can't really say it was all that believable, would a presumably intelligent man with a conscience work at a club owned by a gang boss? would a woman threatened with rape NOT pull the trigger? would Dexter Fletchers character really give two kilos to someone when his nasty, unreasonable boss had 'put the word out!'?

close your eyes and listen to it and it sounds just like 'the getaway' game!

disappointed with it, i expected more. but still, i now know what Simon Rimmer does during the week lol

id give it a swerve and wait for 'Blitz' or watch 'Harry Brown' which is far superior.

  • Disappointing Film

    Rated - 0.5 stars
By LaFarge (23 reviews) from UK , 03 Feb 2011
I'm a big fan of British films, particularly if they are gangster type ones. This one though I found very disappointing. The plot was predictable, acting wooden and it dragged.

    Not recommended I'm afraid!
