Released in cinemas after the TV animated series took off, this cartoon feature expertly captures the feel of the Batman comics. The Phantasm is a formidable vigilante, who painstakingly executes Gotham's most powerful criminals. After both the police and the underworld mistakenly hold the Dark Knight responsible, Batman must unmask the real culprit and at the same time Bruce Wayne has to deal with a woman from his shadowy past. Stylishly drawn, and powerfully driven, with a strong cast of voices — including Stacy Keach and Star Wars's Mark Hamill — this is a spirited riposte to the live-action film series.
This is the best Batman film ever made.
Even more beautifully animated than the TV series, this masterfully replays teh Dark Knight's origins, a' la Frank Miller's 'Year One', while weaving a fascinating story all of its own. It also lets Batman do that which the live action movies have thus far failed to do: it lets him be the great detective he always was in the comics. There's a wonderfully old fashioned, pulp fiction feel to the whole excercise that is so very, very right for Batman.
So - forget Tim Burton. (I'd say forget Schumacher, but that goes without saying.) Chris Nolan has his work cut out to top this. I say again - the best Batman movie yet.
The Mask of the Phantasm was the first of the Batman animated movies made - and it shows in all the best ways.
The high production values, the polished direction and the wonderfully written story are married to the excellent voice acting that have made the series such a gem.
In brief, Bruce Wayne is haunted by the return of an old flame who has returned to Gotham City. Meanwhile a new vigilante is operating in Gotham, and his methods are highly questionable.
A film worthy of family entertainment, and which even ties in well with Batman Begins!
