Most helpful review Batman - Mask of the Phantasm

  • Forget Burton.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is the best Batman film ever made.

Even more beautifully animated than the TV series, this masterfully replays teh Dark Knight's origins, a' la Frank Miller's 'Year One', while weaving a fascinating story all of its own. It also lets Batman do that which the live action movies have thus far failed to do: it lets him be the great detective he always was in the comics. There's a wonderfully old fashioned, pulp fiction feel to the whole excercise that is so very, very right for Batman.

So - forget Tim Burton. (I'd say forget Schumacher, but that goes without saying.) Chris Nolan has his work cut out to top this. I say again - the best Batman movie yet.

  • Batman - Mask Of The Phantasm: Good, Not Great

Batman - Mask Of The Phantasm is considered by a large portion of Batman fans as the greatest Batman movie ever made. I may be inspiring their wrath by saying this, but I just don't see it.

It is basically an extended episode of the admittedly brilliant Batman - The Animated Series, given a slightly larger budget. Flashbacks reveal Bruce Wayne as he falls in love, while in the present that same love has returned, and a conspiracy involving her father, some mobsters, and ultimately The Joker is gradually peeled back.

All in all, it was an enjoyable film, with some surprisingly mature themes for what is essentially a saturday morning cartoon (these mature themes are a hallmark of the series), but I just wasn't pulled into it in the same way that I was Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan's movies. Kevin Conroy's voice-acting is fantastic as Batman, but I find it doesn't convey the emotion required for a good portion of the storyline, making me not really care. And Mark Hamill's Joker, whilst brilliant, also seems a bit childish for such a mature film. His voice in the videogame Batman - Arkham Asylum for example, is far more menacing and I think would have suited this movie better.

It is however, definitely better than Joel Schumacher's movies, and definitely worth a watch.

Having not watched any Batman animated series except Sub-Zero, I was a bit out of my depth. The film plays quite like the old Burton films, which makes sense as it was released in '93.

The plot is quite predictable, and the animation isn't inspiring, though there are some iconic visuals (they steal some from Burton, such as one of the Joker's entrances).

Speaking of the Joker, this is the first time I've heard Mark Hamill voice act him. Crazy!

I do love this film, and until the release of Batman Begins it was the most fully realised Bat-film.

Some parts are a little wearisome on repeated viewings, but overall a minor classic.

A Must have for all Bat fans. A dark and chiling vision into the life and origin of the bat.

  • Ok, but doesn't really deserve the hype

I received this in anticipation of it living up to the hype of being one of the best batman films, second best after 'Batman Begins' if you listen to Empire magazine. However, I was fairly disappointed by the film, I respect that as an animation, the TV series included, this characterisation has done a great service for the character more in keeping with the comics. Unfortunately though, in terms of delivering A-grade feature-length material, rather than as series of good episodes, this falls short of the mark.
