Tim Burton's BATMAN, inspired by Frank Miller's graphic novel THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, is a Gothic, Wagnerian treatment of the Batman mythos that explains the origins of Batman (Michael Keaton) and his nemesis, the maniacal Joker (a ripe Jack Nicholson).Gotham City is a sunless, ominous haven for criminals, held in the corrupt .. incredibily dark and gothic - best of the four

This the first and probably most popular of the four films. It is probably the best of the four. Jack Nicholson is brilliant as the maniacal Joker. He and the whole film are incredibily dark. It is a generally dark film lacking the tongue in cheek humour of the earlier tv shows. Michael Keaton is the best Batman he brings out the ambivillance of his character he's often on the edge perhaps even of his sanity. The set is also dark and has a real gothic appearance. A very good film with good soundtrack and rightly popular at its release.

    Best Batman movie

Only Tim Burton could do a movie like this, managing to capture the dark gothic style of the dark knight comic books.

    1st and best Batman movie!

    Great

Atmospheric rendering of the Dark Knight’s adventures, oozing with style and noir, although as usual with Burton’s films the script is in more desperate need of a make-over than the Joker himself; but, with Nicholson’s deliciously over the top performance and Danny Elfman’s dazzling score it’s hard to get to preoccupied. And it’s a comic-book film anyway…who cares about the script?

Set the benchmark for comic book movies

tim burton very rarely fails to delivery when it comes to attention to detail in his movies, plus to incorporate the likes of nicholson and keaten as leading roles, you are certain of a classic. Batman for me is the daddy for all of the latest comic-books that have travelled over to the silver screen.

    The best

In my view this is the best Batman film made, Keaton played Batman very very well and Jack as the Joker was great, he really captured what the character was about.

This does not get you caught up in the reasons why Batman is here, the explanation given is straight forward and to the point, compared to 'Batman begins' which takes the myth behind Batman thus taking away the mystey.

    The best batman film

Batman Returns was a good film but was lacking in a charasmatic bad guy, the original Batman has that in spades. Jack Nicholsen steals the show as the maniacal Joker and Michael Keaton is also excellent as the brooding Dark Knight. The film is dark and the direction is typical Tim Burton style.

A great film and I really enjoyed watching it again.

    The darkest of Dark Knights!!!

Now anyone who has read the comic The Dark Knight Returns will see the obvious effect this had on Tim Burton when directing Batman. I for one have no problem with that at all, it is beautifully gothic and dark, with Keaton doing a great job of a revenge fueled anti-hero. You can literally feel his pain at his parents death which drives him on.

Remind me why was Burton ever replaced?!?!?!?!?!?!

great but outdone by the new film

this is a fanstatic film with a stering performance from keaton but nickelson stole the show. he is perfect for this roll and is fantastic but with the introduction of the new batman film with the late great heath leger as the joker this film is completly out done. heath's joker is incredable and it's acting at it's best. the late heath leger is one of the finest actor ever
