This worthy tribute to “the few” has spectacular air battles, a memorable re-creation of the Blitz and a terrific cast that includes Michael Caine and Christopher Plummer. It is interesting today to watch so many great names in the twilight of their careers: not just knights Ralph Richardson, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier (as the tight-lipped Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding), but also Trevor Howard (excellent as Air Vice-Marshal Keith Park), Robert Shaw, Harry Andrews, Kenneth More, Patrick Wymark, Nigel Patrick and Curt Jürgens. Most of Sir William Walton's original score was dumped and replaced by Ron Goodwin's, but a tantalising fragment remains in the air battles.

Plodding attempt to cover an historic event from too many angles and with too many guest stars, all indistinguishable from each other when masked in the cockpit during the repetitive and interminable dogfight sequences. On the ground, things are even dull

How did Guy Hamilton allow such poor acting from superstars?

The film is comprised of great camera work, excellent color, a great music score, the action is good but what about the lousy acting from stars that we know are capable of better than this, Olivier, Howard, Jurgens and Richardson are fine and even the supporting actors but Plummer, Caine, York, Shaw, McShane and Fox et.al. give patronizing hammy performances. The fault must lie with the direcor Guy Hamilton although the german actors gave very believable performances. Why a sector controller with hideous skin grafts from an actual fiery air battle? All very patronizing, he must have gone down in his blazing hurricane only a year previous, amazing how his skin grafts have taken so well in one short year! However there's nothing can match the scope of this film and you will never see actual WW2 airoplanes like these in a film ever again so I give it 5 stars even with it's lousy acting.
