Bravo Battered BoysBy Charles Brickley from Andover, Hampshire England , 28 Feb 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]This was another classic war film that I had not seen for a couple of decades and wanted to see how it stood up to the test of time. It was very popular in 1949 when the pressures and stress of warfare were still fresh in the minds of the audience.
This film is the grand daddy of Band of Brothers which also recreated the Battle of the Bulge on an indoor set as it makes it so much easier to control the weather. The fact that the cast of Battleground were supported by members of the 101st Airborne who had actually held off the Wehrmacht at Bastoigne during the winter of 1944 added an extra touch of realism to proceedings.
The film is in black & white which adds to the bleak atmosphere and it is slightly dated but it still retains some of its glory as a window to view the standards and humour that prevailed at that time.
It is well recorded that the response to the Germans call for the Beleaguered and Battered B****rds of Bastoigne was Nuts and this scene is recalled in this film in a manner that would have brought cheers in the aisles in 1949.
I enjoyed watching this portrayal of the simple soldier's life in the field, particularly a young Marshall Thompson as the new boy Jim Layton trying to make sure that his fellow soldiers remembered his name. All the cast did their bit to contribute to the story of one of the American Armys worst and best engagements of World War II.
If you enjoy watching classic movies then certainly add this one to your list, I do not think you will be disappointed. Well worth the monthly hire fee!

Oh dear, painful to Watch! No Stars!By a customer , 20 Nov 2012
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHideThis is bad to the point of irritating!
Singing, jovial, stereotypical GIs with lead ricocheting off trees (yep, off trees!) during the 'Battle of the Bulge'! If I hear one more German shout 'Schnell' (apparently this is all German soldiers say), or an American shout, 'Quick, it's the Krauts!'......................I'll.......
Check out 'Band of Brothers' if you want to see something that does the 'Battle of the Bulge' justice......
precursor to Band of BrothersBy itstinks (702 reviews) from North of Reading , 20 Nov 2012A troop are sent to war and find themselves in a snowy, misty forest just like a couple of episode from Band of Brothers.
Reasonable drama with a few fire fights.
It's a real pea souperBy Oldbloke (349 reviews) from Sidmouth , 03 Jun 2012Film follows a small company of paratroopers from their arrival in the unknown town of Bastogne to their weary trudge pased the relief columns at the end of the Battle of the Bulge. It does occasionally feel a little studio bound, but the snow and cold are effectively created and there are frequent 'outdoor' scenes that do at least look like Europe. Perhaps the most surprising thing is the non heroic attitude of the soldiers, they are all desperate to avoid fighting. In particular, poster boy Van Johnson plays a character always on the verge of running away. There's not a lot of action to speak of but the acting and writing is excellent and this is still one of the best war movies ever made.
