A great reworking of a classic programme. Unmissable.
Finally the've put philosophical intelligence back into science fiction - and it's been a while. Excellent casting, sterling performances, stunning visuals, a cryptic plot, and good chemistry between the characters, sets this version of Battleship Galactica light years ahead of its predecessor. The more you watch the more you are drawn in. The robots are scarier - humanities plight more precarious - and the episodes are all part of a grander scheme - this is compulsory viewing - particularly for space buffs.
As with many series of this nature the good episode, bad episode factor means this can only be given 3 stars. Action packed episodes (usually the ones involving the cylons) deserve 4/5 stars and appeal to the sci-fi nerds such as myself, other episodes are verging on dull where the sub-plots of various love interests and the political manouvering between Adama and the president take centre stage. These are more akin to a soap opera that just happens to be set in space. Overall the plot is reasonable (and in context believable) and characters have some depth, but those expecting episode after episode of sci-fi action will be disappointed at times. Random irritations - having not known of the pilot series the first episode starting with "...previously on BG" was a disappointment and had to make some assumptions to fill in the gaps, particularly with regards to the doctor and his visions involving some blonde haired bird. Not very inventive with the city backdrop on the homeworld, looks like the set for any US town in any Earth based film, for example one kitchen scene was complete with electric tin openers, kettles, toasters, etc, unlikely on a planet set millions of light years away. Also the use throughout of a made up expletive "Frack"(?) sounds ridiculous.
Defunct U.S. TV cop series The Shield is going out in style by leading the nominees for the upcoming Television Critics Association Awards. The gritty show ended its seven-season run in November (08) but it hasn't been forgotten by America's top television critics - with 11 nods. The Shield will take on Lost, Mad Men, Saturday Night Live and Battlestar Galactica for Program of the Year, while it will also fight for the Heritage Award alongside Star Trek, E.R., M*A*S*H and Saturday Night Live,...
