    Refreshing ...

Wow. This has to be the first time ever I've seen any 'remake' and thought that it was actually better than the original!

It's a bit formulaic (oh look, it's a sci-fi pilot and the captain is going hand-to-hand with the bad guys ... *again*), but it's an excellent introduction to the series.

Good things? The alcoholic Colonel Tie, Adama, 'nuclear missiles', the 'disaster movie' feel, Boltar, the CGI cylons, the 'human' cylons ... and tonnes of other stuff.

Bad things? Some people will hate the 'human' cylons idea, but hell Arnie got 3 films out of the human-looking-robot idea so it's obviously got something right? The whole 'baby' scene ... I guess this was just in case you mistook them for the good guys (maybe they should carry a sign), Boomer at the end, and that's it (ok the flashing red light on the front of the cylon ships).

It's not the original, it's different. If you want the originals then they're here to rent as well ... If you like the idea and want to see what someone else can do with it then this is the dvd set for you.

    Excellent intelligent SciFi

This remake is true to the spirit of the original, and yet at the same time darker, more intelligent, more gripping and a damn sight more realistic. My wife (in general) isn’t a Sci-Fi fan but she watched this avidly… It has characters that you care about. It has documentary style camera work that makes the whole thing look like a news broadcast. The space scenes are so much more realistic than anything on other SciFi series. The performances are spot on and the script, special effects and cinematography are excellent.

Oh, and Starbuck and Boomer are women. Get over it.

As it should have been in the begining

This is a tough gritty realistic take on the original story. What differs here in story is that the original Cylon War didnt last too long and an amnestice was agreed. Now 40 years later the cylons are back.... Whereas in the original the cylons won the war straight off...

The differences continue in terms of gritty-ness and the fact that you actually CARE about the charectors.. Excellent sci-fi stuff and the filming is excellent as well.

Whoever you are, you will enjoy this.

If you have never heard of Battlestar galactica, or you know all ofthe original series off-by-heart - you will still enjoy this.

    Great Pilot to the Series.

    One word... Fantastic....

OK I have a little more to say, this is an excellent remake of the original series. This DVD is the pilot to the series (of which I have not yet seen), but they integrate the old imagery of Cylons with the new to make this instantly likeable by the old BSG Fans. Oh and Starbuck is a girlie now, much easier on the eye.

Definitely worth a watch if you are a BSG fan or you like a little Sci-Fi.

Small downside is the strange way the director introduces action scenes, you realise what I mean when you watch it. hopefully that will be dropped on the rest of the series.

    Space Opera for telly!

A superb pilot for a potentially great new series.

As a fan of the original I was expecting to hate this - Starbuck and Boomer have had gender re-assignment, the cylons are no longer silver-clad stormtrooper wanabees and there are no fluffy sidekicks anywhere to be seen. However the drama is gritty and realistic and gone is the winking at camera camp of the original.

Hopefully there's plenty more where this came from...

    A thoughtful remake

I mainly rented this for curiosity value, as I couldn't really imagine why someone would remake Battlestar Galactica.

However, I was surprised to find it a very thoughtful remake of the original. A lot darker and more mysterious, but still true to the spirit of the original.

I think both fans of the original and general sci-fi viewers would find it a worthwhile rental.

    GALACTIC!!!!

I was never a fan of the original 70's series. I only watched a few re-runs a few years ago out of curiosity and was, well frankly bored to death by it. So I was more than a little reserved when I saw that a remake had been made, especially as most remakes - The Planet Of The Apes, The Ring, and now The Grudge to name just a few - are usually total poo. So I sat down with a slightly biased opinion that this would follow in those turkeys footsteps. How wrong could I be. I don't mind admitting that I was spellbound by it for all 3 hours. Indeed, I found myself hoping it would never finish and that I wasn't watching a pilot for a series but looking in to another dimension through my TV!!! Sure, the more die-hard BSG fans might find holes and flaws, but for fans of sci-fi this rates as one of the best there has been for a very long time. The story is easy to follow - mankind on the run from some nasty robots called the Cylons who are evolving and determined to whipe us off the map. The SFX are out of this world...literally. I challenge anyone who likes sci-fi to not enjoy it.

3 hours of my life wasted

Ok, so perhaps a little harsh, but I do think this was incredibly slow and boring. I was recommended this by a friend, and, not knowing or having seen any of the original - thought I'd give it a try. Foolishly I didn't look at the running time on this, so by 120 minutes in and no sign of ending, I started to get a bit worried.

The main characters are vacuous and shallow, generating no empathy with the audience and from the outset, their 'mission' seemed to be trying to shag each other. Oh, and could they rip off Star Wars X Wings a bit more? And that annoying blond (Starbuck?) who clearly wanted to be 'one of the boys'?! Terrible, hammy over-acting. Overall: long, boring and by the end of the film, I couldn't give two sh*ts what happened to any of them. Rubbish.

    A very watchable reworking

This is a good update to the classic series. If you take it on its own merits it is an excellent sci-fi mini-series but if you are a classic series die-hard then you may not like some of the changed details.
