Sorry folks, if you were expecting madcap hilarity, then stick to the trailer. In fact, the trailers preceeding this film were funnier than the feature. I don't often feel moved enough to review, but this was Disappointing with a captial D. It had so much potential to be a real goodie, but somehow it just didn't work. A combination of bad script, bad acting (surprisingly) bad direction, a general 'budget' feel to it and the story was just weak and cheesy. So much so that we actually wondered whether it was aimed at being deliberately ametuer in line with the theme. But it just wasn't that clever.
Really folks, I urge you not to waste your time and money on this one, there are much better things on offer and this just won't hit the mark.
How does Jack Black sleep at night? He plays the same character in every film - one which became epicly boring after school of rock - and still calls himself an actor.
I have lost all faith in hollywood and all of the people who were involved in the production of this dreadfull and outrageously predictable film.
After i watched the film and left the cinema, i felt depressed and almost vommited. i wish God was kind and let me rewind the two hours i spent watching this horrendous film.
Seen the trailer and was prepared for Jack Blacks usual standard of film, which I love. He seems different in this film though, almost manic, and the way he and his co-star talk over over each other became annoying - maybe they were improvising? My kids laughed more at the trailers before the film,
Was less of a Jack Black movie and more of a nice Feel Good movie, give it a go.
Having seen this film with an open mind having seen both Jack Blacks back catalogue and Michel Gondrys Eternal sunshine I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was a film that was both funny and touching, a film that can touch the soul and make you feel good about the things around you. Why on earth the studio have pitched this film as a comedy through the posters and the trailers is beyond me as anyone expecting another school of rock will be seriously disappointed. When funny this film is hilarious but that is in patches and in the right doses. Try this film out if you fancy seeing something that will warm the heart and let you leave the cinema with a warm glow in your heart.

A reasonable comedy that given the subject idea could definately have done better. Unfortunately the whole thing gets lost in a fictional 'message' that overrides the whole comedy aspect and dilutes what could have been an excellent fun filled hour and a half into a slightly below par bit of fluff. Performances are good and it is worth a watch, just be kind to yourself and have it on your rental list rather than waste a trip to the big screen to watch this one.
This is a curious film. Pitched totally wrong to the public with a trailer and publicity campaign that tries to make out the film is a laugh-out-loud comedy. The end result is actually a surreal, and heartwarming tale of community spirit, free choice, and defining ourselves and our past how we want it to be, not how others tell us. A lot of priase has been levied on Jack Black's role in the film, and it is quirkily amusing. However to me it was Mos Def's socially stunted and slow witted (yet cannily clever when it comes to improvisation) character who was the heart of the story. This is a good film, albeit nowhere near the majesty of Eternal Sunshine, which sadly will not be to everyone's taste. If you want side-spplitting comedy, go rent Pick of Destiny. If you want amusing, surreal journey's of the soul, then give Be Kind a shot.
I was really looking forward to this, and was worried because of poor reviews.
But they were unfounded. This was so funny, the ways of recreating the videos were pure genius and it was a sweet funny tale of bringing a community together. Jack Black I sometimes find OTT, but he was great, but the real star was the unassuming character played by Mos Def. You must watch this, it's an amazing film.
I just watched this film and its one of the best i have seen this year.
I think the other reviews either have no heart, no sense of humour or have not seen the film, i found it a joyful film with a good flow and the usual high standard we/I have come to expect from Gondry. Black plays his usual loveable funny part and Mos adds to the movie.
I love the way it is shot and the story is very intriguing.

After seeing all the trailers and listening to all the hype about the film, i felt as if it was a must watch. After viewing this, i'd say its a must miss film. There are a few funny moments in the film, mainly the bits on the trailers.. But the film lacks a a telling story line, and instead of being his eccentric funny self (As in school of rock, nacho libre) Jack Black plays a pretty standard role in the film.
Wouldnt really recommend this film to any one, just watch the trailers, you wont miss much.
Personally I felt this film was good but could have been better. After watching the trailer many of us expected a laugh a minute comedy after all it's Jack Black! However, instead we received somewhat of a hit and miss. When it was funny, it WAS hilarious! But when it wasn't the film felt slow, predictable and lacking something.
The film is basically about Mike (Mos Def) and his mental friend Jerry (Jack Black) who are left in charge of the local video store. When the stores entire stock is erased by Jerry, the pair must do instant remakes of Hollywood hits to stay in business.
What's good? Michel Gondry, the director who provided us ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, provides a great cast, of which kudos must be given to Jack Black who was the saviour of this film. Def and Black's low budget video versions of Rush Hour 2 and Ghostbusters are brilliant and provide the best laughs through out the film.
What's bad? The film can appear slow and loses direction when the duo aren't making films and tries to make some sort of depressing farewell to the video cassette, which does not work. Also there are not that many gags aside from making the movies.
Overall, the film is not a complete disaster but do not believe the hype. The film as I said before is good but could have been so much better but check it out for yourself.
