A movie about a lifetime friendship between two women makes a refreshing change, especially when it stars powerhouse Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. They both make the most of their roles as two girls from completely different backgrounds who meet as 11-year-olds and, despite various setbacks, remain friends over the years. Pretty Woman's Garry Marshall directs slickly and Hershey is very appealing as a poor little rich girl, but the movie belongs to the astonishing Midler, playing a brash, selfish singer. This drama is at its best when Midler gives free rein to her character rather than when it slips into schmaltz.

In another age, this sentimental feminist weepie would have been classified as a woman's picture, though Midler's singing gives it a wider appeal.

A truly beautiful and moving story about friendship. The cast is outstanding. A great movie that I strongly recommend. I will definately add it to my DVDs collection. A must-see.

    Hilarious tragedy

great film! 2 girls meet as kids and the story tells of their separate lives and dedicated friendship but turns out one girl is living a complete repeated life of her mother insofar as she even had the same hands... only she broke free of the life her mother had all thanks to the other girl who influenced her to break free and do her own thing which just makes them stronger!

Hilarious moments but get the hankys ready, once you see someone elses tears start its always going to raise that lump in your throat AND IM A BLOKE!! ...the music never helps, just to bring it on a little easier!
