A movie about a lifetime friendship between two women makes a refreshing change, especially when it stars powerhouse Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey. They both make the most of their roles as two girls from completely different backgrounds who meet as 11-year-olds and, despite various setbacks, remain friends over the years. Pretty Woman's Garry Marshall directs slickly and Hershey is very appealing as a poor little rich girl, but the movie belongs to the astonishing Midler, playing a brash, selfish singer. This drama is at its best when Midler gives free rein to her character rather than when it slips into schmaltz.

In another age, this sentimental feminist weepie would have been classified as a woman's picture, though Midler's singing gives it a wider appeal.

A truly beautiful and moving story about friendship. The cast is outstanding. A great movie that I strongly recommend. I will definately add it to my DVDs collection. A must-see.

great acting
I watched this movie when it first cam out then I watched it with my mum we ended up crying,the story of the two girls is just good and a great friendship they have i don't like bette
midler but i do like this movie.
It is a very enjoyable movie to watch with your friends or mummy curl up on the sofa kind of movie. -

It is about 2 friends who have an up and down relationship. One of them has a daughter. Towards the end one becomes ill and from there on it gets worse. Very sad film - it made me cry and I'm a 36 year old man. 4 stars for making me cry, not many films can manage that.

ohhhhhh wow!!!
I saw this and had to review it!! Rent it, buy it, get really drunk on a weekend and sob your poor little heart out to it! Yes it's cheesy, yes she's really, really ginger, but the film is amazing. It's one of those films that gay guys love, girls cry at and straight guys pretend not to like. At the very least it's worth a rent! I might watch it now actually!!!! yay!!!!

I LOVE this film, Bette Midler is brilliant and the story so moving. It's a real chick flick and perfect for spending two hours on a cold winter's day with a box of maltesers.

Total chick flick
This is a total chick flick so why was I balling my eyes out as well as my wife.
Its a truly great story that takes you all way through their friendship. Well worth watching even if you are a bloke. -
