(88)Reaches for your hankerchief
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 20 Feb 2013Weepie that follows friendship between two women through their lives, one a self obsessed broadway star, the other a lawyer / mother who dies young. Watchable, fair but disappointing film.- Was this review helpful to you?

A little dated and sentimental, but a 'chick-flick' classic
By ZKPW (42 reviews) , 02 Jul 2012I know I'm a bit late to the 'Beaches' party, which may explain why this film felt a little dated to me; but I don't just mean the hair and clothes, I mean the approach to telling a story like this (which would be tackled in a much grittier and in-depth way in the 21st century), the script, the dialogue... and it's clear that this is a bit of a Bette Midler vehicle (why else would anyone - especially a sweet, educated women like Hershey's character - ever like or entertain Midler's selfish Broadway vamp, let alone do what she does at the end?! Even Bette is flummoxed!). It's all a bit of an 80's-soppy-and-not-entirely-believable-friendship movie`... and yet those movies made the 80's great. Plus, it has two strong female leads and focuses on their lives (not their husbands) at a time when cinema was still reluctantly pulling itself out of a culture of misogyny, so power to it. I can see why my best mate at secondary school loved this film so much now, although it won't be going on my personal all-time-fav list. (p. s. I'm not a complete cynic, I did cry at the end...).- Was this review helpful to you?
