As a passionate lover of reggae music - especially roots and dub music - I was keen to see this 1977 documentary by Jeremy Marre.

I had read a review on IMDB.com and was looking forward to seeing a hard-hitting and gritty documentary about Jamaica, its politics, struggles and music - from this point of view I was disappointed.

However, Jeremy Marre makes very good documentaries based on the subject in hand. He got access to the top recording stars and some lovely shots of the simplicity and realism of the Jamaican recording industry - Jack Ruby sitting on a broken deck-chair under a palm tree 'auditioning' potential recording artists, for example.

As a reggae devotee the one-hour film told me very little I didn't already know, nor did it place the music within the social and political context of the (extremely turbulent) time, however I can forgive ALL that for the music! The Abyssinians sitting on the dirt-floor of a shack, singing an acoustic version of Satta Massagana, Joe Higgs strumming on a porch, Jimmy Cliff rehearsing in the recording studio, Inner Circle playing on a makeshift stage in a Kingston street - all these were priceless moments of reggae heaven!

Get it for the music, not the insight!

I found myself hooked from start to finish with this inspiring documentary, and is a must for any reggae lovers. The best aspect of the film for me was the amount of live archive footage they used, to see Jack Ruby auditioning musicians in the slums of Jamacia, Lee Scratch Perry recording in his studio, and loads of live footage from Bob Marley concerts was just amazing.
